IRS Service Centers offer a way
to obtain an employer identification number (EIN) over the telephone. The
taxpayer is able to use the newly obtained employer identification number
immediately.
Apply for an employer identification number
by telephone:
1) Complete Form SS-4, Application for
Employer Identification Number, prior to calling.
2) Call the IRS Service Center number where the tax return will be filed (see
list of phone numbers below). The phone numbers provided are only for
issuance of an employer identification number - EIN.
3) Do not wait until a payment or a tax return is due before obtaining an employer identification number
- EIN.
An IRS operator will ask for information on
Form SS-4. The operator will issue an employer identification number - EIN
and instructions on where to
mail or fax the completed Form SS-4 and/or Form 2848, Power of Attorney
and Declaration of Representative, if applicable.
Form SS-4 must be signed by:
1) The individual, if the entity is an
individual,
2) The president, vice-president, or other principal officer, if the
entity is a corporation,
3) A responsible and duly authorized member or officer having knowledge of
its affairs, if the entity is a partnership or other unincorporated
organization, or
4) The fiduciary trustee or administrator, if the entity is a trust or an
estate.
